February Update, a Freebie, and a Giveaway!

Stopping in today to share some of the things we've been up to in second grade, a freebie, and a giveaway!

We celebrated the 100th Day of School and celebrated with 100th Day Centers. One of the centers was to build a 100 cup structure. Here are some of the kiddos with their structure.
We also celebrated Valentine's Day by making The Teacher Wife's love monster bags to hold our cards. The bags turned out so cute! We used them throughout the day to hold all of our Valentine's Day papers and projects we created, as well as our Valentine's Day cards, and they were perfect to carry home at the end of the day. The back of the bags included a little bio about the monster and the students were pretty creative. I love sneaking writing in to art projects.
We've been working on personal narrative writing and "staying in the moment." We're currently writing about a time we got hurt, and I can't wait to read my students' final drafts! Here's the template we've been using to sketch out our beginnings, middles, and ends, and write our narratives.
Feel free to grab this freebie if you'd like!

Outside of second grade, I'm excited to announce that I'm part of a new, fun collaborative blog called The Collaboration Connection.
Collaboration Connection
It's a fantastic group of teachers, clipart creators, and specialists! We're kicking off the blog with a huge giveaway and would love for you to win some great products! Click on the picture to check it out!
I can't believe the end of February is drawing near! I love seeing all of the daffodils popping up around town letting me know spring is coming soon!

100th Day

Yesterday was the 100th day of school and I have to admit that I have always been sort of a Negative Nancy when it came to celebrating the 100th day. I was in the mindset that it was more of a kindergarten and first grade thing. I mentioned the 100th day a time or two in my teaching career, but never really did anything about it. The bloggy world and Pinterest have changed me. I first stumbled upon some fantastic free 100th day writing sheets from Lesson Plan Diva. One has the students write what they'd do if they had 100 dollars, and another has them write about what their life would be like when they were 100. So silly. I love it.

I let my students choose which one they'd like to use for writing yesterday and then I spent my lunchtime reading them over and CRACKING up in my room. Alone. With the door open. So much so, that a coworker came over to see what I was doing. I'm pretty sure she was doing a wellness check to make sure I wasn't losing it.

This little darling wrote: "If I were 100 years old I would be pretty. I would have pearl earrings and necklace and 1,000 dollars and 5 cats."

This little dude wrote, "Sitting.........just sitting. Going to the store, boring stuff. Nothing really." Hahahaha!

Oh...this one. "I would be grumpy. Old, thin, lazy and festering. And I would hate bad weather!" This is the one that I pretty much lost it over. The picture alone!

I love their idea of what older people do, and how crabby they can be!

Reading what the students would buy with 100 dollars was also pretty entertaining. Chocolate, cats,
pet alligators and spiders.

At the end of the day I brought out 100 plastic cups and told the students that one of their choices for Friday Choice time was to build a 100 cup structure. I think some of the kids peed themselves they were so excited!

They got started right away and even included a "drawbridge." I really thought they were going to have more fun knocking it over than building it, but they were very protective of it and didn't even want to knock it over at the end of the day.

A little peek into my 100th day of school. Next year, I'm definitely doing more. Especially when I heard that a 5th grade class had a 100th day talent show where they had to do something 100 times. So many great ideas out there.

Don't forget about the maj-uh sale going on at TPT! Have an excellent weekend!
